Fine Quality Wood Fencing and Site Amenities

Founded in 1933

Walpole Woodworkers, Inc. is one of the country’s only remaining vertically integrated manufacturers of cedar fence and outdoor products.

Walpole’s “Forest-to-Finish” management of material quality and distinctive designs are unique in the industry.

Northern White Cedar

Walpole is a company of woodworkers. Therefore the quality of the material and how it is used is of vital important to us. We choose northern white cedar because it is a durable, decay resistant, straight and stable wood with a cell structure that accepts stain exceptionally well. Prior to metals and synthetics cedar was used for all types of outdoor construction including shipbuilding and homes. It is the wood we began with in 1933 and continues to be our choice today.

Lumber from our Own Mills

Northern white cedar is cut at our own mills in Chester and Detroit Maine. By controlling the entire process from forest to finish, Walpole can guarantee the integrity and durability of our product. We use lumber that has been specifically cut to the proper size and proportion for a better looking, strong and longer lasting fence.

The Walpole Fencing System

The Walpole Fencing System makes it possible for customers anywhere in the country to obtain over 80 distinctive styles of pre-assembled fence, or custom fence, for local installation. Each fence is built-to-order and can be purchased either natural or factory pre-stained.  By specifying Walpole fencing, professionals can add distinction and value to a property with full confidence in materials, appearance, durability, and reliable customer support.

Style, Proportion, Visual Appeal

Unlike ordinary fencing, Walpole styling is not compromised by the use of only common lumberyard material, or by minimizing lumber content to shave the price. Our fences are designed to be visually appealing with balanced component sizes, spacing and attractive overall proportions.

Uncompromised Joinery

While we carefully manage our costs we resist pressures to cheapen our product. An examination of joinery shows the uniquely high standard of a Walpole fence. With specialized equipment we pre-cut rectangular mortises in posts to accept the entire rail rather than drill a hole in the post at the job site and cut material from the end of the rail to fit in the hole. We leave all of the available material in place to maximize the life of the fence. Also, since we begin with the entire tree, our posts are not limited to 8 feet in length. We cut them long enough for proper burial depth, (a minimum of 32”) and as long as 12 feet overall.

Life Guard Post Base

To extend the life of their client’s fence, designers can specify that LifeGuard post bases be installed. LifeGuards protect the base of posts from termites or wet soil conditions. Our unique bases prevent wicking and capillary action that causes premature aging. The heavy wall PVC base is 36” tall by 8” in diameter. A 1 ¼” rebar runs between post and base. Concrete fill adds weight to base for solid foundation. Offered in white and earth tone.

Staining

Walpole has developed an exclusive pre-staining process. At our facility, a primer coat is applied to minimize the wood’s natural bleeding. Then we thoroughly coat the assembled fence section with stain. Called Flo-Coating, the stain and cedar create a natural bond, resulting in a deep, rich finish that provides years of protection, far superior to staining after installation. Walpole offers quality Benjamin Moore Acrylic stains in fourteen standard colors and one semi-transparent Weathering Stain. Custom staining is also available.
