Cool in the Shade

In its broadest sense, architecture includes the impact of good design on public policies and health. Designing for shade aims to strengthen the ties between effective design and skin cancer prevention. The possibilities for preventative design are significant when a broad-based constituency of architectural, urban design, landscaping, planning and health professionals seek to understand the ramifications and implications of this important health issue.

Shade systems can be built, natural or a combination of these. It is rare that a single solution, eg. constructing a shade structure, will provide enough shade to protect against direct and indirect UVR. This month on CADdetails, we explore a series of actions that can be used as part of a comprehensive strategy to provide adequate shade in a range of situations.
