Welcome to the CADdetails.com Technology eNewsletter. Its purpose is to explore cutting edge technologies used by the Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry, and in particular how they are used to connect manufactured products to end users (specifiers).

Revit 2008 Architecture, this week's focus, examines the need for Building Product Manufactures to upgrade their product information to this new architectural format. Other topics for this series are listed below.

The Need for More

Building Product Manufactures (BPMs) are scrambling to provide product content to a new community of high-end, large-scale project groups - "Revit Users". While BPMs are beginning to recognize the benefits of providing product information in Revit format, most are still not able to produce these files in-house and are looking to third parties to develop them on their behalf.

Revit content providers and developers, such as CADdetails.com and RevitCity, are ramping up to meet the needs of BPMs to help close the gap between what is needed by the design community and what is available to them at present.

A Growing Community

Revit 2008, from Autodesk, has emerged as one of the most widely used architectural Building Information Modeling software. Bundled with the latest version of AutoCAD, users now have the ability to test Revit 2008 and familiarize themselves with all its features.  As a future replacement to AutoCAD, it represents a shift not just from 2D drawing to 3D modeling but also to an efficient way of passing information across multiple disciplines.

This shift comes as the AEC industry recognizes the value in sharing all design and construction information in one file. From speeding up the design process to performing simulated criteria tests, Revit represents a robust and functional design format.

As a single file with an integrated database, Revit can be shared among multiple user. Plans, sections, elevations, specifications and schedules are interconnected allowing changes in one to be automatically updated in all others.

Key Benefits

  • Embedded Product Information - CAD sections, bill of materials, test results and matching specifications are all contained in the one Revit template for each product line.
  • Product Information is Easily Updated - through parametric capabilities, changes to product information (ie. the CAD drawing) are reflected in the project as a whole.
  • 3D Models Showcase Products - 3D models help sales representatives illustrate how the project "fits" into it's environment.
