Welcome to the CADdetails.com Technology eNewsletter. Its purpose is to explore cutting edge technologies used by the Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry, and in particular how they are used to connect manufactured products to end users (specifiers).

Building Information Modeling will be the first in a series of topics that address today's most current technologies relating to the AEC community. Upcoming topics are listed below.

Building Information Modeling (BIM)

Manufactures have been asking us about Building Information Modeling (BIM) and how it affects them.  BIM is a new tool used by the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry and is described as "3D, object-oriented, AEC-specific CAD". The BIM concept has been popularized by several technology providers such as Autodesk, Bentley Systems, Graphisoft, Nemetschek, CADdetails.com and others.

It may be beneficial to think of BIM as everything to everyone as it has the capacity to serve up the required design information to every discipline along the design chain.

BIM files (or models as they are called) contain a database of product information - dimensions, options, variations, bill of materials, etc... and all the design documents - cad drawings and specifications that are required for the project. More importantly, it shows how each product interacts with the project as a whole.

Manufacturers who provide Revit files to architects become part of the design process and integrate their products seamlessly into the project.  A proper BIM model can contain 3D massing information right down to the connection details and specifications for a product - speeding up the design process.

In short, BIM is Building Information used for Modeling in parametric software programs. One of the fastest growing BIM software is Autodesk's Revit 2008 (to be discussed further in the next newsletter).  A Revit file contains all of the Information about the products used in design and construction and how each interacts with the building.

As part of the next generation of Building Information Modeling, CADdetails.com offers its own solution to BIM in its Architectural Toolbox.  It combines the power of BIM with the ability to connect online not just with Revit, but with any BIM software (ie. VectorWorks and MicroStation) as well as legacy programs that may not be parametric like AutoCAD.

As the only option for online parametric BIM compliant CAD files, CADdetails.com offers it's clients a unique service that sets them apart from their competitors and the rest of the AEC industry.
