Industry Spotlight: Designing for
Diversity
The Americans’ With Disabilities
Act (ADA 1990), covers the civil rights of people with
disabilities. The Act is there to ensure reasonable
accommodations in public places, prohibit discrimination based
on disabling conditions and to define disabilities. Universal
Design (UD) goes beyond ADA compliance and considers the needs
of all people. Universal Design enables everybody—not just
people with disabilities—to navigate, manipulate, and
appreciate our world.
Panasonic has recently announced the completion
of the Eco & UD House, a life-size model house that
embodies the company's commitment to ecology and the
principles of Universal Design. The showcase House consists of
eight rooms including a concept room, a ubiquitous living
room, an Eco & UD kitchen, an energy corner with a
fuel-cell-co-generation system, an intelligent entrance
equipped with an iris recognition system, a high-quality home
theater with a universal remote control for operating all AV
equipment and a bedroom that promises a good sleep with
bedding, light, sounds, and air conditioning controlled.
Located within the complex of Panasonic Center Tokyo, it is
open to the general public for visitors to experience
innovative and futuristic living in the context of a typical
home setting. View Full Article

In-Street
Pedestrian Crosswalk Sign |
|
According to the National Safe Kids Campaign, “In 2002,
more than 43,000 children ages 14 and under were treated in
hospital emergency rooms for pedestrian-related injuries.
Despite recent declines, pedestrian injury remains the second
leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among
children ages 5 to 14.”
These staggering statistics are
at least in part responsible for the inclusion of a centerline
pedestrian sign in the most recent version of the Federal
Highway Administration’s MUTCD (Manual of Uniform Traffic
Control Devices).
The new MUTCD School-In-Street Pedestrian Crosswalk
Signs from Impact Recovery Systems have a height of 47” with a
total panel size of 12”x44” and are manufactured with 3M
Diamond Grade Fluorescent Yellow Green Sheeting. All signs are
equipped with a “anti-twist” feature that prevents the sign
from being twisted sideways... |

Nichiha uses Nanotechnology to create Self Cleaning
Fiber Cement Panels
Solidifying their position as
the worldwide leader in fiber cement technology, Nichiha
employs nanotechnology in three new panel lines; Canyon Brick,
Field Stone and Quarry Stone. These new panel products are at
the leading edge of what and where the future of exterior
cladding is headed.
Nanotechnology is a technological breakthrough not seen
in other fiber cement products. A microscopic layer of water
particles is densely populated along the surface of the panel
to create a repellent feature that does not change the texture
or look of the panels, yet protects the surface. Every time it
rains the panels are rinsed clean from staining, smog, smoke,
exhaust fumes and other environmental pollutants in the
atmosphere. The siding panels can also be sprayed down or
flushed with water, cleaning the surface and restoring it back
to its original beauty... |

2006 Top Ten
Green Projects |
|
In recognition of Earth Day 2006, The American
Institute of Architects (AIA) and its Committee on the
Environment (COTE) have selected the top ten examples of
sustainable architecture and green design solutions that
protect and enhance the environment. The projects will be
honored on May 3 during a presentation at the National
Building Museum in Washington and again in June at the AIA
2006 National Convention and Design Exposition in Los
Angeles.
The 2006 COTE Top Ten Green Projects address
environmental conservation and the notion of sustainable
development with designs that integrate architecture,
technology, and natural systems. They make a positive
contribution to their community, improve comfort for building
occupants, and reduce environmental impacts through strategies
such as: reuse of existing structures, connection to transit
systems, low-impact site development, energy and water
conservation, use of sustainable or renewable construction
materials, and design that improves indoor air quality.
