Industry Spotlight:
Improving Work Zone Safety

Roadway work zones bring together a dangerous mix of construction workers and motor vehicle operators. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) reports that the number of people killed in motor vehicle crashes in work zones rose from 693 in 1997 to 1,181 in 2002. In addition to the fatalities, more than 40,000 people are injured each year in motor vehicle work zone crashes.

With the annual National Work Zone Awareness week fast approaching – scheduled for the week of April 3, in Washington, D.C. – it’s a good time to be thinking seriously about traffic and pedestrian safety. Many resources are available online to help you in your efforts to reduce workzone injuries and fatalities, including the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, the American Traffic Safety Services Association, & the Roadway Safety Awareness Program.

If you would like to know more about National Work Zone Awareness week, visit www.atssa.com and click on the Meetings and Events link.

  • MONTAGE PLUS ATF®:
    All-Purpose Fence System
  • Over the last decade, ornamental fence (employing vertical pickets) represents the fastest growing segment of the fence industry in America. No other fence product offers the value, strength; security and maintenance-free quality of an ornamental picket fence.

Ornamental fences of the past have offered only compromises. The strength of steel with welded construction meant increased maintenance; the beauty of wrought iron meant significantly higher costs; the capability to follow sloping terrain meant the presence of unsightly fasteners and oversized picket holes, or the higher cost of custom fabrication. Conversely, to provide freedom from maintenance, the use of ultra-light materials such as aluminum and plastic raised the cost and totally sacrificed the strength of a welded steel fence. The need for compromise has been addressed. Ameristar has collected the innovative ideas and suggestions of hundreds of professional fence contractors and blended those inputs into a complete fence system called Montage Plus ATF (All Terrain Fence). www.FenceOnline.com.
