Industry Spotlight: LEEDing By
Example
The interest in creating sustainable,
environmentally friendly buildings is growing tremendously.
Architects, building owners and other professionals are
discovering the economic and social benefits related to
choosing quality, sustainable building products.
The LEED (Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design) Green
Building Rating System is a voluntary, consensus-based
national standard for developing high-performance, sustainable
buildings. Based on well-founded scientific standards, LEED
recognizes achievements and promotes expertise in green
building through a comprehensive system offering project
certification, professional accreditation, training and
practical resources.
The organization that certifies green buildings,
the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), has recently granted
the Chicago Institute for Green Technology (CNT)
“Platinum” certification. Platinum is the highest
certification the USGBC grants under the LEED green building
rating system, and CNT’s building is only the thirteenth in
the country to have received it. Designed by Chicago-based
Farr Associates Architecture and Urban Design, the award

Managing
Urban Stormwater |
|
The City of Denton, Texas’s proximity to Dallas/Fort
Worth has made it a growing area like so many cities in the
western United States. With this growth comes the challenge of
managing stormwater runoff from developed areas and the
impervious surfaces that accompany them. The existing
stormwater controls were unable to handle heavy rainstorms,
flooding part of Bonnie Brae Street near Interstate 35 and the
University of North Texas.
The city’s first proposal was to protect the channel
with 24 inch (60 cm) rock rip-rap, but because of the
visibility of the project, the unaesthetic appeal of rock was
a concern. Another problem was the cost of rock was far beyond
the city’s projected budget. The alternative to using rock
rip-rap was to find an attractive soft-armor solution that
would perform comparatively to 24 inch rock.
Fortunately, Lone Star Products, an authorized North
American Green Erosion Solutions Supplier based in the
Dallas/Fort Worth area, had frequently battled similar
situations... |
