TIPS AND TRICKS

Next time you insert a CADdetail into your AutoCAD file use the astrix * sign in front of the details name like *100-100.dwg. This will explode the drawing and allow you to quickly change the layers and fonts to match your personal preferences.
A good tool is the "match properties" command in AutoCAD.

To automate the process check out Hurricane or "AutoCAD scripts"

Designing with Energy Efficiency in Mind

The importance of energy efficient buildings has assumed great urgency today, in light of rapidly depleting energy resources, increasing pollution, and greater environmental awareness.  Fortunately, by adopting an integrated approach to design, buildings can be tailored to meet the occupant's need for thermal and visual comfort at sustainable levels of energy & resource consumption.  Below, we examine the three key components of this approach.

Incorporate passive solar techniques in building design to minimize load on conventional heating & cooling systems.

'Passive solar design' is design that integrates a combination of building features to reduce or even eliminate the need for mechanical cooling and heating systems.

Passive solar design works best in small to medium-sized buildings with low internal heat gains, such as townhouses, arenas, community centers, and low-rise retail and office buildings.  However, in any architectural style and in any part of the world, a designer can achieve energy efficiency while maximizing comfort levels by carefully considering the characteristics of the building site, including solar exposure, wind patterns, terrain and landscaping features.   Computer simulation programs can prove invaluable in this process because of the complexity of system combinations and interactions.

PDF Solutions for CAD professionals

Bluebeam is a professional PDF application for creating, viewing, editing and redlining PDF files.  The intuitive interface uses tabs to display open PDF files and allows for multiple, side by side PDF viewing.  The CAD specific symbols and markup tools make it quick and easy to redline PDF drawings.  Bluebeam also integrates with AutoCAD and SolidWorks for one-click PDF creation and batch processing.

Bluebeam-CAD

Bluebeam just released version 6.0 with exclusive new functionality that integrates web browsing with PDF viewing, editing and markup.  WebTabs™ allows users to search online for PDF brochures, catalogs and documents and open them in Revu.  Once open, users can combine the content with other PDFs, add comments or markups and share with colleagues.  Revu also stores the url for CADdetails.com and other favorite websites for easy access.

Also new in 6.0 is a revamped, built-in measurement tool that calculates area, perimeter, length, volume and other measurements from your PDF drawings.  Measurements are saved in a list that can be summarized in PDF or exported to other file formats.

Bluebeam PDF Revu is available in Standard edition and CAD edition.  A 30-day trial can be downloaded at www.bluebeam.com.
