HARDSCAPING
AND LANDSCAPE DESIGN ::By Stephanie
Norton

No landscape is
all greenspace. In fact, there are two main
components in any landscape design, softscape and
hardscape. 'Softscaping' deals with the
appropriate weaving and placement of grasses,
plants, trees and shrubs, while 'hardscaping' is
the brick-and-mortar approach to designing with
stone, concrete, brick, asphalt and more. It is
the hardscape and softscape, joined together, that
give the landscape its beauty, vibrancy, and
depth.
For example, the
Imaginary Garden, shown above, is a horizontal
sculpture roughly 15 feet wide and 800 feet
long. The promenade is made up of two
intertwining vines that travel the length of
Walnut Street Park in Cary, North Carolina.
It's a complex design in native red, yellow
and chocolate brown Pine Hall Brick clay pavers,
which starts at the parking lot and ends at the
opposite end of the park, where it bursts into a
blossom to create a plaza.
The idea of
the Imaginary Garden was to connect one end of the
park to the other, providing an organizational
spine and a logical divider. To one side, there is
a manicured lawn and a place for families to visit
and play. To the other side, there is a
natural area of woods and wetlands with mulched
hiking trails. The brick patterns within the
Imaginary Garden enhance the pedestrian experience
and provide interest for children, who follow the
bands of colors as they walk.
The project is
specifically intended to protect and exhibit the
environment. Wetlands have been protected by
bridges, trails are mulched to lessen soil
erosion, and a rain garden has been installed as
part of the storm drainage plan. The clay brick
pavers themselves represent a green building
material, as they are made of clay and water,
which are the most abundant raw materials for
construction on the planet. Clay brick pavers also
last for centuries and can be recycled in
countless ways, making them truly
sustainable.
Landscape
architect Brian H. Starkey, RLA/ASLA, said the
installation brings a level of playfulness and
imagination to the overall aesthetic of the park,
while evoking movement and nature.

Dramatic Seawall Mimics Nature While
Creating Hospitable Habitat for Sea
Life
Erosion control is always a
concern for homeowners along the Southern
California Coastline. Imperious waves can wreak
havoc on the sandstone cliffs, beaches, and
existing seawalls, creating dangerous scenarios
that threaten homes and wildlife habitats.
Coastal shale
sandstone is typically found along the waterfront,
creating a dramatic and colorful array of wavy
lines in the rocky cliffs. In a recent
residential project, Boulderscape was asked to
replicate the geology by refacing a homeowner's
existing retaining walls.
"We are
extremely pleased with the results," says the
homeowner. "Boulderscape brought in a crew that
included seven sculptors who worked over a two
week period to create a highly natural finish to
our walls. The blend is amazing. It is extremely
difficult to tell where the Boulderscape walls end
and where nature begins, and that's exactly what
we wanted. It was synergistic all the way,"
explains the homeowner. "The Boulderscape crew
listened to what I had to say and was extremely
sensitive to capturing every nuance of what nature
intended. We even see crabs now creating new
habitats in the crevices of the stone created by
Boulderscape that haven't been there for years."
In addition to the seawall,
Boulderscape continued its work into the
homeowners' back yard creating decorative boulders
as landscape elements and for a hot tub that is
nestled in more boulders that perfectly mimic the
natural rock formations along the shoreline below.
"We're very proud of our work
on this project," says Mark Allen, Owner of
Boulderscape. "Our crew met the unique creative
challenges this particular geological blend
required and the biggest compliment we received is
actually not having our work
recognized!"

Choosing the Right Footing
for the Job
 Safety and liability are issues
that face all of us in the construction industry
every day. Improper installation of footings,
especially pier applications, as well as recent
deck failures have prompted changes in codes
across North America. Compliance with codes is
becoming increasingly important. Not only are
building codes becoming more stringent and clearer
about what is approved, every day they become more
rigorously enforced. Check the codes in your area
to ensure you use the right sized footing for the
job - and reduce your liability.
Bigfoot Systems® Footing Forms are the
Original Code Evaluated
engineered footing form for construction tubes
that meets or exceeds building codes throughout
North America. Bigfoot Systems® reduce labor costs
by as much as 90%. Bigfoot can be installed in a
single day, which saves time, money and
aggravation. The products advantage rests with its
shape, a bell shaped footing with a round base.
Bigfoot Systems offers several sizes that will fit
all 6" to 18" construction tubes.
The Bigfoot System®Footing Forms have also
been stringently tested and evaluated by CCMC,
Report # 12839 - R.
