Elements of Outdoor Living
:: By Stephanie Norton

Builders take note: with more and more North Americans feeling the pinch of a tough economy, homeowners are increasingly looking to get more 'bang for their buck' from their residential investments. The trend for more people to stay at home and invest in their surroundings, rather than spend on pricey vacations, has stimulated great interest in outdoor settings that create a luxurious and resort-like atmosphere. The outdoor living trend encompasses anything from increased emphasis on traditional outdoor elements like decks, porches, and patios, to expanded outdoor cooking areas and well-appointed outdoor "rooms."

In this article, we look at just some of the items that help to create a successful outdoor living space, including outdoor appliances, planters, flooring, furniture and lighting.

    Barbara Butler
    Welcome to my world of play! Since 1987, I have been creating unique playgrounds for children, both public and private, using only all natural redwood. With my team of "play professionals", we build and install green play structures and treehouses to endure for generations. We offer both pre-designed and custom-designed play houses. Tough terrains, challenging spaces and unusual requests are my specialty: let me design a tree fort, clubhouse, or swing set specifically for your tree, your home, your dreams...
    ~ Barbara Butler

    The Malibu Lighthouse, shown above, was built atop an existing stone guesthouse that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. This wooden play fort brings together images of lighthouse, sea waves, and driftwood. The Malibu Lighthouse is a delightful mixture of wrap-around decks, spiral ramps, porthole windows, hand-hewn boards, copper roof panels and artistically shaped railings.

    Barbara-Butler Custom play structures are site-specific and designed to fit all kinds of challenging terrain: a small space, a steep hill or ravine, retaining walls, lots of trees to fit around, or any challenging space that just calls for something unique! Barbara will meet with you to look at your yard and brainstorm ideas. Her goal is to design and build the perfect play structure for your space and your family.
