•Beale Street is a historically significant 1.8 mile-long stretch located in downtown Memphis, Tennessee, and is considered the “Home of the Blues.” Spanning from the Mississippi River to East Street, it is lined with blues clubs and restaurants and plays host to several festivals and outdoor concerts.
•A popular tourist attraction, Beale Street was originally paved with cobblestones; city planners in Memphis decided to renovate Beale Street in 2002, after patrons and tourists continued to stumble over the uneven cobblestone surface.
•StreetBond® SB150 Pavement Coating
•A local asphalt crew was hired to remove the cobblestones and lay fresh asphalt. Crossroads Decorative Pavement imprinted the new asphalt in an offset brick pattern and applied the Burnt Sienna-colored StreetBond® SB150 Pavement Coating. Without the StreetBond® SB150 Pavement Coating on top, the untreated asphalt tends to crack from UV exposure, which breaks down the asphalt binder. Unlike traditional pavers, bricks, and cobblestones, imprinted asphalt doesn’t heave, eliminating potential liability situations and trip hazards. Imprinted asphalt also makes it easier for people with disabilities to navigate the area.
•Nearly a decade after the original installation, the Standard Construction Company was commissioned by the city of Memphis to recoat the existing imprinted asphalt surface with StreetBond® SB150 Pavement Coating. Since the original asphalt had been coated shortly after being laid, it was still in excellent condition with no evidence of cracking and did not require replacement —just a simple cleaning and recoat of Burnt Sienna-colored StreetBond® SB150 Pavement Coating, ultimately extending the life cycle of the surface and saving the city the cost of removing and replacing the asphalt itself.
•The brick pattern and coating color choice created the illusion of “real” brick, an asset for a district listed on the U.S. Register of National Historic Landmarks.
