When freshly milled and before oxidation, the wood is a vibrant purple that turns to a rich reddish brown with exposure to UV light. Purple heart decking has a unique characteristic in that the sap becomes exposed along the grain lines as it acclimates. This sap is soft to the touch, not tacky and is less than 1/8” wide. The sap dries and flakes off of the wood within 2 months after installation. If the wood is allowed to gray, the grain lines remain accented because of this sap.
