Skillful, Custom LED Solution Preserves Historic Fixtures

The Great Hall in Denver’s Union Station is a masterpiece of Beaux-Arts design including multistory arched windows and bays on the façade, terrazzo floors, and a barrel vault spanning the entire width of the space. Magnificent wall sconces and three large chandeliers provided lighting for the vast passenger waiting area.

When the Great Hall was renovated in 2012-2014, the architects wanted to preserve the one-of-a kind wall sconces for their historic significance, while enhancing lighting levels and improving energy efficiency with LED.

ANP Lighting was selected to provide a custom solution that would enable the sconces to be retrofitted in place. Working with LEI Electrical Contractors, ANP Lighting designed a LED retrofit solution that combined a tower array and a platform array to recreate the warm glow of the original lighting and provide up light to accentuate the barrel vault ceiling.

The high-pressure sodium light source in the sconces was replaced with the ANP HighPro™ LED Sansi® 42w tower array and a 78w platform array. Dimming was incorporated to preserve the warm glow of the original lighting. A custom bracket assembly was used for the light source, so the sconces could be retrofit in place. Our LED design also solved a problematic expensive maintenance challenge.

Union Station’s Great Hall reopened on July 12, 2014, and the impressive space is now referred to “Denver’s Living Room”.
