Near the corner of Las Olas Boulevard and route A1A in Ft. Lauderdale a contemporary architectural shotcrete Porte Cochere opened to the public in 2020. The structure is part of the Las Olas Boulevard Corridor Improvement planning program. The steel and concrete feature, approximately 80’ long by 35’ tall, is an iconic gathering point for beach and park goers within Las Olas Beach Park. The park project also included more extensive green space, inviting gathering places, landscape and streetscape enhancements, a tree-lined promenade, and a new parking facility.

The unique shape of the Porte Cochere evolved through 3D modeling phases. The models were used to custom cut (using CNC equipment) the expanded polystyrene formwork. These forms were then integrated to produce the sleek and curved shapes within the Porte Cochere. Secondary steel and a shotcrete structure coat followed the EPS forms to provide the final finish. COST artisans were responsible for delivering the smooth, almost fluid-like, character. Upon completion, an anti-graffiti coating was applied to the surface providing a brilliant white coloration. The form and finish blends seamlessly with the bookend buildings and the serpentine walls that separate the beach from the boulevard. The elements together form a consistent architectural theme.

Specialty scopes of work completed by COST include initial consultation, shop drawings, CNC work on EPS forms, secondary steel, structure and finish architectural shotcrete coats, topical paints and anti-graffiti applications.
