The University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, one of the leading pediatric health care centers in the United States, celebrated its dedication and grand opening in late 2011. This 1.1 million square-foot facility in Ann Arbor, devotes 855,000 square feet to inpatient space and 245,000 square feet for clinics and offices, in addition to about 180,000 square feet for future growth and expansion.
This construction includes a nine-story tower for clinic space, and a 12-story tower devoted to inpatient care that bridges inpatient and outpatient services within the same medical disciplines to create a programmatic approach to patient care on each floor.
Because one of the most successful health care architecture techniques in recent years has been the increased use of daylighting and outdoor views, glass manufacturers have stepped up to ensure that more glass area means an increase in visible light transmission with lower reflectivity. By providing SunGuard advanced architectural glass for the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, Guardian offered improved energy efficiency of the building envelope and contributed to a comforting setting for youngsters and families needing relief during a stressful time.
HKS, like many architects working on health-care projects, specified the low-emissivity (low-E) and spectrally selective glass with a range of visible light transmission, between 40 and 70 percent, while offering increasingly lower reflectivity than was possible in the past.
SunGuard was the right glass for the job: Fabricated by Guardian Select Fabricator Trulite Glass & Aluminum Solutions and installed by Contract Glaziers Inc., the project includes 50,000 square feet of SunGuard Neutral 40 on clear and Sun - Guard SuperNeutral 68 on clear. Independent studies have shown that, over a 10-year period, SunGuard-coated glass products can save thousands of dollars in upfront and ongoing energy-related costs for a typical building. For this and many other architecturally innovative and environmentally responsible features, C.S. Mott earned silver LEED certification.
