A popular high-end shopping center in Del Mar, California, the Flower Hill Promenade wanted a large monument sign that would greet guests and entice attention from the thoroughfare. They asked Planters Unlimited to create something that would fit with their flower theme. We decided to create a 40-foot monument sign made out of planters, with flowers and greenery as the lettering and background.

The monument sign was created using five 8-foot custom fiberglass planters placed together. The planters were slightly angled so that the front of them would be visible to the street, displaying its message for all to see. The planters were made with false bottoms in order to leave room for the shallow root systems of the greenery and perennials that would be planted. This would also make them lighter weight and save on both money and maintenance while leaving just enough soil space (approximately 10") for planting. The letters for the sign were made using PVC stencil cutouts that we created to drop easily into the planters, allowing them to be easily removed when replanting or when replacing with seasonal designs in the future, if desired.
