After a wealthy industrialist received permission to build an extension at the back of his 18th century residence in the village of Castellamonte in Piedmont, Italy, he and his architect opted for a lightweight, transparent structure with 360° glass windows. The extension is home to a showroom. With the roof of the extension being in full view from the first floor of the villa, a green solution was the obvious choice.

Installing a heavy weight natural green roof however was much less obvious on the light, wooden roof structure. At the same time, the prospect of frequent maintenance was not a particularly attractive prospect either. With Roofingreen® both these issues were simply off the agenda.

The installation of M10 DRAIN panels was challenging due to the shape of the roof, having a 20° slope near the perimeter. Roofingreen’s expert, in-house installation team managed to deal with the angle ingeniously, obtaining a homogeneous grass surface. Around the roof edge the panels are fitted under the copper roof edge trim, leaving no space for wind gusts to get under the turf panels.

After almost 10 years, areal images testify to the excellent durability and UV resistance of Roofingreen’s turf. The green roof remains almost indistinguishable from the surrounding garden and gives the whole complex a highly natural feel and look.
