The City of Tempe, Arizona is a bustling city with a growing population that is committed to sustainability and reducing its environmental impact. One of the ways the city has accomplished this is through its Tempe Highline Canal Multi-use Path project. This project has been designed to improve the connectivity and accessibility of the area, as well as enhance the aesthetic appeal of the canal.

The project spans about four miles in the west central and south areas of Tempe, running from Baseline Road to Knox Road. It connects to the cities of Phoenix, Guadalupe, and Chandler and provides access to a variety of neighborhoods, employment centers, parks, schools, and commercial areas. The project was designed to improve the path with lighting, landscaping, street crossings, public art, and other amenities.

One of the most noteworthy aspects of the project is the custom solar lighting systems that were designed by the City of Tempe and SEPCO (Solar Electric Power Company). These solar lighting systems were created to match the architectural needs of the space while also providing good illumination to the pathway. The use of solar lighting systems was a perfect fit for the project as it aligns with the city's commitment to sustainability and reducing energy consumption.

By using a mix of AC-powered lights and off-grid solar lighting systems, the Tempe Highline Canal Multi-use Path Project can balance reliability, cost-effectiveness, and environmental sustainability in its lighting design. This approach not only helps reduce the carbon footprint but also ensures that the pathway is well-lit and safe for people to use, especially at night.

Other reasons for cities opting for solar on projects such as this include reducing energy consumption and costs by using renewable energy sources. Solar lights do not require electricity from the grid, and they can be a cost-effective and environmentally friendly option for lighting public spaces. Additionally, the aesthetic appeal of the canal was enhanced by the use of solar lighting, creating a pleasant atmosphere for visitors.

Tempe Highline Canal Multi-use Pathway was completed using funding from the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality program, Tempe Capital Improvements Program, and Transit Fund. The project aims to reduce traffic congestion, promote public transportation, and encourage the use of alternative modes of transportation.

The Tempe Highline Canal Multi-use Path project has been a great success story for the City of Tempe. The project was able to help the city achieve its goals while not damaging environmental and financial goals. The solar lights met the architectural needs while providing a safe space for people traveling along the pathway. By enhancing the Highline Canal pathway, the project aims to create a pleasant and safe environment for people using the path and improve connectivity and accessibility in the area. This project showcases how cities and municipalities can work on their projects for the future while keeping sustainability and environmental impact in mind.
