The Facility

Air Canada’s hangar facilities in the GTA.

The Heating Challenge

Air Canada was looking for ways to improve and satisfy employee comfort, reduce energy costs, and conserve energy. Air Canada contracted the services of Hatch Engineering, an energy Engineering Consultant firm specializing in HVAC design and energy retrofits, to complete an operational review of Air Canada aircraft facilities in Toronto; to make recommendations about heating systems that are more efficient and to improve comfort while saving energy.

After a thorough review of these older aircraft facilities, Hatch Engineering concluded that due to the scale and height of these hangars, the forced air heaters used to heat these facilities were generating a lot of stratification in the ceiling, resulting in large energy loss.

Implementation

Hatch Engineering contacted Gary Dummer requesting a heating solution to keep stratification in the ceiling to a minimum, reduce energy costs, and conserve energy.

SRP’s VS systems were selected, as they provide the most energy-efficient comfort to large industrial facilities, such as aircraft hangars, that have larger energy requirements (BTU/hr./Sq. Ft.) due to large infiltration loads, vehicle access requirements, poor insulation, and high ceilings.

Results

The installation of SRP’s VS Systems, along with SRP’s ACCU-RATE® control system with supervisory control & data acquisition (SCADA) package with BACnet connectivity saves Air Canada a considerable amount in annual energy costs.

Additional reported benefits included improved comfort, improved indoor air quality, and extended equipment life with reduced maintenance.

In addition. Air Canada awarded the contract to SRP to equip their new $90 million aircraft hangar at its Toronto Pearson Global Hubwith SRP’s VS Systems in 2017. A total of seventeen VS Systems were installed in the 127,000 square foot hangar.
