Just like in the first half of the 19th century, when 7th Street became an early magnet not just for farmers selling fresh meats and produce, but for merchants of all stripes who sold their wares in the adjoining blocks, traffic on 7th and G Street needed attention and solutions. Whether it was the great Center Market of the 1870s on Pennsylvania Ave and 7th, or the modern Verizon Center, at the heart of Penn Quarter, this area has a unique history as one of the city's first and longest-lived commercial boulevards.

One of the busiest streets in the heart of downtown DC, the 7th and G Street intersection, was previously identified as a high crash location. To improve pedestrian safety, DDOT worked with DowntownDC BID to add curb extensions on several intersections on the 7th Street corridor. By adding curb bump-outs using planters, paint, and flex posts, DDOT aimed to help shorten the pedestrian crossing distance, slow down turning vehicles, and creating clearer sightlines for drivers. DDOT and DowntownDC BID turned to TerraCast for our successes in similar pedestrian improvement projects in New York City. The newly installed TerraCast planters created placemaking opportunities in the downtown area, making the streets safer and more welcoming.
