Arboretum Recreation Center
Washington DC

Project Details

Location
Washington DC

The Arboretum Recreation Center was originally built in the late 1960’s and was in need of a much overdue renovation. The renovation project included the addition of a larger community center to include a mass timber ½ gym, a multi purpose room, an outdoor fitness center, soft-play classroom, flex computer lounge, and a new playground. The site amenities were designed with many native plantings and trees with Washington, DC in mind. Additional amenities included a pavilion for community gatherings, outdoor amphitheater seating, TitusTrail walking paths, community gardens, greenhouse, and improved site lighting. Why did DC Parks and Recreation decide to add TitusTrail walking paths on this project instead of asphalt or concrete? TitusTrail is a permeable rubber pavement system that reduces runoff, better for trees, reduces pollution into local creeks and rivers, and also is a great force reduction walking trail compared to asphalt or concrete.
