Hotel Del Coronado
California, USA

Project Details

Location
California, USA

One of the most famous hotels in the US, the Hotel del Coronado has a long, wonderful history starting more than 130 years ago - having hosted celebrities, royalty, U.S. Presidents, and beach-lovers for generations. The Del (as it’s fondly known) was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977 and is a famous icon of San Diego, CA.

Tournesol had the opportunity to work with Burton Landscape Architecture Studio, landscape designers out of Solano Beach, CA, on a recent remodeling project at The Del. Burton’s designs specified 74 of our Wilshire Collection rectangular planters in various sizes, and for three specific areas on the hotel property.

Starting outside on the hotel Sun Deck near the sand, 49 of our Wilshire rectangular planters (in various sizes) were utilized as deck dividers to create small spaces and shaped elsewhere allowing larger areas for more people to gather. The sizes varied from the largest planters at 120” L x 30” W x 24” H down to the smallest at 24” L x 18” W x 18” H manufactured in lightweight FRP fiberglass, in a smooth texture and bright white color. Each of the 49 planters was fitted with matching CWM Modular Container Irrigation Systems, containing a proprietary sensor that monitors the moisture level of the soil giving only the amount of water needed. This decreases the maintenance for facilities, as well as balancing the moisture and oxygen levels of the plants, allowing them to best thrive.

Inside the hotel Fitness Center, Burton specified 16 Wilshire rectangular planters, the longest size measuring 120” L x 30” W x 24” H with matching CWM irrigation systems as well. The fitness center’s planters were also fabricated in FRP fiberglass material and finished with a smooth texture in the color Sierra.

Finally, the hotel parking area required nine of our Wilshire Collection rectangles, however, these were manufactured in lightweight GFRC concrete for stability and sturdiness, as the parking is a high traffic area. These nine planters were finished in a texture that’s gritty to the touch, Natural Sand, and in Shark color (a shade of gray). Two of the nine planters were mounted with our Wally Bench in wood and steel for seating capability and measured 96” in length.

The Hotel del Coronado is as magnificent today as ever and we are proud to have been part of this successful modernization and update, we hope the guests all enjoy!
