Allendale is a small American town with all the charm of a Norman Rockwell painting. With a population of just under 7,000, and a reputation of being one of the friendliest towns in Bergen County, the town has never lost its sense of history. West Allendale Avenue is Allendale’s downtown- a combination of restaurants, specialty shops, and professional offices recognizable by its vintage architecture and landscape design. Neglia-Engineering Associates recently completed a downtown revitalization that included replacing lighting poles, pavers, and block curbs, and adding accessible curbs, planter arms to the lights, new benches, planters, and signs, while keeping the historic feel of the town intact.

The crumbling cobblestone sidewalks were replaced with Copthorne® pavers, inspired by European street pavers. These pavers have up to four times the strength of conventional poured concrete to withstand the vehicular traffic on the driveways and storefronts. The pattern created using alternating colors of Burgundy Red, Burnt Clay, Old Oak and a Basalt border brings a new vibrancy to the historic downtown street that will last for years to come. The refresh of the street itself, combined with the new planters, curbs, streetlights and signs brought the Allendale business district up to modern usability and accessibility standards without losing the timeless beauty of the original architecture and streetscape design.
