The Hydro-Systems Laboratory at the University of Illinois facilitates research and education on river meandering, coastal erosion, oceanic turbidity currents, sedimentation engineering, environmental fluid mechanics and hydraulic structures. To support the growth of the Civil & Environmental Engineering department, the university took on a renovation and expansion project. This included improvements to pedestrian and vehicular connections.

Upland Design implemented a permeable paving system throughout the corridor that connects the Hydro-Systems and Newmark buildings. Unilock Eco-Priora™ pavers were chosen for their wider joints that allow excess rainwater to filter back into the open-graded permeable base and subsoil. This helps reduce flooding, decrease ice buildup and improve local water quality. Not only do these pavers offer the added benefit of exceptional durability and skid resistance, the stones’ aspect ratio and herringbone laying pattern further contribute to the project’s long-term performance.

To complement the surrounding building architecture, Series™ finish in Golden Tan and Il Campo® finish in Heritage Brown were the selected finishes and colors for the 5 x 10” permeable shape. This design choice helped to foster a cohesive design that lends itself nicely to a seamless outdoor transition between spaces. To complete the project, the site was further enhanced with outdoor furnishings and plantings, adding dimension to an already welcoming environment for students, faculty, and visitors alike.
